Space Oddity

This is all Axioms fault. He posted up photos of his latest addition to his old school inquisitor warband and especially the diminutive 'Scrat' and I was instantly inspired to dive into the bits box and convert up something, anything.

What I ended up with was based on an imperial ratling with the spare helmet from the White Dwarf subscription model from a couple of years a go (I didn't subscribe, but I was able to get a hold of the model, wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

The shotgun is from the chaos cultist leader model and I green stuffed some weird mutant two toed feet and a nice big freak badge.

I poured the paint on him after I got in from work. Quick and nasty like. I've no idea who he is but I like him!

Compilationandonandon.......

The Compilation, better known as 'the yellow one', is the second of the two books that gather articles from White Dwarf and sells them to the greedy public in a handy, bound, format. Unlike the Compendium this particular collection is actually split into thematic sections. So I figured I might as well review it in the same format.

Cocksure's Gambit

Finally the day has arrived! I headed out last night and ventured across deepest darkest Englandshire to Snickets house where he and his brother, Erny, were about to take part in the filming of an episode of the classic historical/fantasy TV series, 'Elizabethan Gothique'. In this episode, Sir Thomas Cocksure and his companions, Sir Jack Falstaff, Nathan Jarrow and some fine stout englishers, take time out from fighting on behalf of the rebellious dutch in order to gain some 'personal wealth' at the expense of some madam that locals refer to as 'a witch'. Such uneducated yokels!

The whole force move in from the table edge. They know the 'gold' chest is stored in one of the houses in this hamlet so they decide to split into two groups to search them more quickly.

On the other side of the hamlet a group of Spaniards, who have come to take delivery of the chest from their ally, Lady Giselle, move into the village using the buildings for cover.

More Spaniards

Just a quick post to show off the completed Spanish company. 16 arquebusiers, an Ensign and an officer. A Tercio, which was the overall administrative unit in the Spanish army at the time, would have been made up of a number of Companies, each of which would have had there on set of officers and colours.

Tercio was used on the battlefield but was only really useful in big, set piece battles on flat ground. In the small actions that took place on the broken and waterlogged battlefields of the Low countries, companies were a more useful and flexible sized unit. Spanish companies were usually pike or shot (although the pike companies usually contained some shot) and the shot companies were usually the ones used for the kinds of small scale battles I'm hoping to be playing.

Eventually I hope to have more Spanish companies painted up. The long tern goal will be to paint enough to recreate a Tercio. One company of shot for each corner and another to cover the front plus at least 4 companies of pike to make up the block in the centre (I know, ambitious). But more than likely I'll eventually manage 4 companies of shot and some cavalry back up.

What is more likely is that I add a small unit (8 figures plus an officer) of sword and buckler armed troops like the citadel Estalians that I recently got a hold of above. Although they weren't a recognised infantry type by this point, the sword and buckler armed troops were still used to assault strong points. Often these temporary units were made up of the 'Gentlemen of the Tercio', these were noble born volunteers who would fight in the ranks of the Tercio while waiting to be appointed to a command of their own company or a position as an officer in someone elses. Many Spanish commanders had served with the ranks which gave the force a very unique esprit de corps. These gentleman adventurers would volunteer for dangerous assaults in an attempt to get there valour noticed and be promoted by their superiors.

Vulture Warriors From Dimension X Meet Plenty Of Cheerful Orks With Plasma Cannon

Back in the dim and distant past, when White Dwarf carried all the latest excitement from GW towers to spotty teenagers across the globe, the magazine used to be packed with one off scenarios. Judge Dredd, Runequest, D&D, Call of Cthulu, WHFRP, WFB and more had speacially written and illustrated scenarios published monthly. A story line, PC's, NPC's, GM notes, illustrations, plot points, maps. Everything you'll need to run a game (or series of games) if you were too lazy, inept or dopey to write your own. These were incredibly popular, and even if you never got round to playing them, if you read WD at the time, you'll still remember some of them, even if it's just from the pictures!

The House that Whiskey built

I know I should be scratch building all my scenery but ever since I first saw the new 4ground fantasy houses I had promised myself a load. When this daft witch craft project reared it's head I decided they'd be perfect! Secretly the real reason I wanted some was to see how they are built! I'm a bit of a tech nerd, as I'm sure you already know, and I'm fascinated by the design of these wee dwellings.

Geuzen Company

While this little roll last I painted an officer and a ensign for my first unit of 'Beggars'. A company of arquebusiers to go up against the spanish.

Sir Jack Falstaff and the Mad Monk

Title says it all really. Two more co-stars for the casts for my witch craft fuelled adventures in the low countries.

This means that the villains look like this before the extras come on.

And our dashing heroes look like this (although the casting department are having their doubts about the guy in the hat, he may need replacing before we start filming!)

Toodle pip!

Beauty and the Beast

Giselle and Hurtz are finished. It was only after I started painting them that I realised that the pair are a bit 'disney' but that doesn't bother me too much. It just adds a new level of silliness to this whole game idea.

Casting couch

Forcing myself to stay awake till a semi-respectable hour while the rest of the household flakes out has allowed my to finish off my Renaissance Zombies form White Knight. As you'll know by now these kicked my imagination into high gear and I've been building the idea for game based on these and the rest of my late 16th century figures.  I explained all this a couple of posts ago so I won't bother repeating myself but things have started to move on. I got the 7th voyage rules from crooked dice today and have had a good squint through it and decided roughly on my casts. The above zombies will obviously be part of my the villainous cast. But we need some Villains to be doing the villainy.

My first zombie.....

Managed a few moments (between feeding the family, stopping fights and giving cuddles) to paint up the first pair of White Knights Renaissance zombie's. They are brilliant models, full of character, shambling around in knackered armour. I've got 10 of them altogether so I'll need to get stuck in.

Yarrgh! I wisheth to done on your innards!

They stinketh as much as the gusset of Smelly Beth, the smelliest whore in smellyshire!
