Snicket Rampant 2 - the return of the Rat

Snicket came around the other night and we busted out my new mat and his Elven scenery for a game of Dragon Rampant. Snicket used is High Elves and I used my trusty Hobgoblins. We put together forces the added up to 31 points (an odd number I know but It worked out quite well) and we came up with the following lists.

Lord - Elite Riders
Elven Cavalry -Elite Riders
Archers - Light Archers with better shot upgrade
Spearmen - Light Infantry with a Wizard
Swordsmen - Elite Foot

Lord - Elite Riders
Giant - Elite foot
Hobgobs - Bellicose foot x3
Orcs - Light Archers

We rolled for a scenario and we got escape route. The Elves had to get their units form one end of the board to the other and the Hobgoblins had to try to ambush them.

Snicket had trouble with the first couple of rounds, failing activations and handing initiative to me. This meant that I had a chance to get my troops into position while his barely moved from the start line.

The giant managed to hold up the Elven Cavalry for nearly the whole game (although we weren't using combat correctly and we should have parted after each round but we corrected it in subsequent rounds)

The wizards were only really useful for casting befuddle on each others units and I think I dispelled it at one point as well.

Big Fat Smelly Bastards

After the very soggy family camping trip I finally got down to finishing off these big fat bad boys. They are actually a whole load of fun to paint, so much so that I'm considering a second set as the chaos war bands version of AOS has Blightkings as the main choice in the gurgle war bands. I'm going to be doing some chaos warriors using some old school figures and i've already got some mounted thugs so I've got a good start. Once thats done we'll see what else we can scrape together.

Zenithal = Piece of piss

If you're anything like me, you'll spend your time perusing various blogs, forums, groups etc, looking with jealousy at other folks painting skills and wondering how they manage it. The Scale Creep guys are good for sharing tips and giving constructive criticism to each other but some times I want to try something completely different just to see how it works out. No doubt, like me, you've heard whispers of 'Zenithal' shading and wondered what the hell people are talking about. Is it done secret set of paints? Some kind of airbrush? Black magic? I decided to give it a shot and see what all the fuss is about. But what to paint?

Future Shockinitsi

Sometimes a bunch of figures sit in the Leadpile and wait patiently for you to remember that they exist. They hope in vain that the right project will come along and they'll be lifted from under their brethren and given the attention they have always craved. Sometimes, though, you just fancy painting something cos you want to. And thats what happened with these guys. They are from Lead Adventure miniatures and came to me via Oz, bizarrely enough. After doing my ww2 ruski's I remembered I had these guys sitting in a drawer and decided to dig them out and give them a thorough going over. Just another day long project where I push my luck with my wife's patience. The 10 figures are from two different packs, 'The Red Vultures' and 'Igor and the Red Gang'. They are essentially post apocalyptic communists and are full of cliches covering all the soviet bases. They have the distinctive padded clothing, the fur hats, the AK47's, red stars, CCCP on their armbands and ice picks (you know, Trotsky. Leon Trotsky. Killed with an ice pick. In Mexico. No? Read some history. A lot of them do have lovely round glasses like comrade Leon as well!)

Rockabully Witherwattle

Back to fantasy stuff again then. As I had so much fun painting my first c28 giant I got myself another one. This guy came without a weapon unfortunately but that was easily rectified by having a quick rake around the garden. This guy is made up of the Witherwattle body and the Rockabully head.
