Bugbears

Being of work with the Lurgy occasionally has advantages. For instance you get to catch up on Jeremy Kyle and have a look at dozens of old Cowboy films that seem to be the daytime diet of all the movie channels. If you have the motivation though you can try and get some figures painted such as half a dozen Bugbears. This hairy little mob is made up of 5 of Otherworld miniatures and one lonely citadel example.

The citadel guy actually came all the way from Oz and was missing most of his left arm which had to be replaced with and orc arm and some greenstuff.

I thought, rather than show you the usual army shots I'd do some size comparisons  with some of the troops.
First up we can see the Bugbear towering over a hobgoblin.

Even bigger when compared to a half-orc.

Going toe to toe with the black orcs.

And hunting the troll on the head (he is a little troll)

For those of you who don't know Bugbears are a D&D monster that belongs to the Goblinoid family. They are just bigger and hairier. Citadel did a small range back in the distant path which included about 8 warrior variants and were sculpted by Jes Goodwin. You can see them on this page at stuff of legends. There were also a small family group made at the same time which consisted of a shaman, a female and two young bugbears. A final Bugbear was part of the ad&d monsters starter set. Ironically those pages were originally constructed by the guy that started Otherworld miniatures. Funny old world. If you fancy using Bugbears in your warmer armies you could use this lovely little set of rules put together and illustrated by Zhu Bhajie.

  1. Fantastic unit ! I have to say that I even like the OW ones better than the Goodwin ones (and that's costing me a bit to admit it)

  5. I have one of those old bugbears. Lovely fun sculpts.

Yours are painted really nicely - I like the light green you've chosen for their skin.

  6. The skin tone wins big time here, far better than the usual white human skin tone, it makes them seem like a proper part of the Goblinoids.
I have several bugbears at the undercoat stage but mine are on 40mm bases so will probably just count as ogres rather than use the rules that you linked, same with Gnolls i have waiting-either count as Ogres or Rat ogres.

  7. The Otherworld Bugbears are some of my favorite Kevin Adams sculpts of all time. And I also really like the 80's Jes Goodwin Citadel versions too. But which is best? There's only one way to find out! FIiiiiight! For me Kevs have just the right mix of humour and menace. Ah, and cheers for the plug on me 'army list' :-) Nice paintwork.
